Weekly Wine Reviews: Menage a Trois Silk 2014

Tonight I came home to find this Menage a Trois Silk on my counter. My first thought was that everyone in my house gets to live to see another day. My second thought was that I have seen this label somewhere before…

Oh, yeah…drugstore…

Anyhow the toddler is finally in bed so I don’t have to think about Star Wars or Mickey Mouse for at least 11 1/2 hours so it’s time to try this Silk blend and tell you all about it so then I can get on with watching Grey’s Anatomy (what DOES Meredith do with her kids while she’s off dealing with all that drama?).

The label tells me this is a soft red blend that is “smooth, seductive and will caress me with every sip”. It is a blend of Pinot Noir, Malbec and Petite Sirah, which sounds pretty rich for a soft blend, but we shall see.

The color is a very dark blackberry tone, which also doesn’t exactly say “soft” blend to me. My first whiff is very hot with alcohol, so I swirl a bit and give it some air and sniff again. This time I get warm, seedy fruit (like when you are cooking down raspberries or blackberries to make jam) along with some green “vegetable” (like a hint of green pepper) and a very tiny bit of tobacco.

The wine is, in fact, pretty soft (it must be heavy on the Pinot) and does have a silky mouthfeel as promised. It hits the tongue in a smooth sweet way, like a piece of hard candy. The jam flavors are the most prevalent, but there is still a bitter green and herby undertone. It gives the wine some complexity so that its not simple and “candy” tasting. The finish is one of  cherry cough syrup, which you will frequently find with a fruit forward pinot noir.

Overall, I like the nose a bit more than I like the flavor, it seems a little harsh on the finish. Don’t get me wrong, I will finish the bottle. It’s a nicely balanced wine with a really great flavor profile, but I feel like that “green” taste could be smoothed out a little more, which would make it perfect for me.

This would be very good with a  cranberry and bleu cheese salad or possibly some baked brie. Give it a try when you have an occasion and let me know what you think!

  1. Thank you. My wife and I were searching for words to describe the experience of this wine. You pegged it. The fumes exceed the actual taste. We are in search of a little sweeter red, but are enjoying the search!
